In other business, the Council chose to continue adding fluoride to the City’s water after hearing a report from Water Superintendent Gary Garwood. Garwood reported that Vinton’s water has some fluoride without adding more, noting that three 8-ounce glasses of tap water per day put children at the recommended daily amount. He said soft drinks also contain fluoride, with the amount dependent on the amount in the water where they are bottled.

Mayor John Watson weighed the benefit to kids versus the cost out loud.

“Kids, money, kids, money, kids, money ... kids win,” he said.

The council agreed, directing Garwood to continue adding fluoride to the water.
