City of Plattsburgh councilors will listen to opponents of fluoridated water at a special work session today.

Paul Connett of the Fluoride Action Network in St. Lawrence County will speak to councilors at 4 p.m. at City Hall.

Connett's presentation comes a week after councilors heard from local dentists and health officials in support of fluoride in the city's drinking water.

The city has been fluoridating its water supply since 1956. Councilors recently asked for more information about fluoride, which has been a topic of discussion in many communities over the years.

Dentists argue that fluoride, in very low dosages, has long helped prevent tooth decay and is not harmful in any way.

Connett and other opponents argue that it is harmful and can cause lower intelligence quotients in children.

Councilors have said that they are willing to listen to both sides of the argument before any decisions are made regarding fluoride.

"I'm just going to listen and try to remain 100-percent neutral on this and try to get as much information as possible," Councilor Michael Kelly (D-Ward 2) said.

"It's always nice to hear varying points of view."
