Glacier National Park may have problems with air quality if new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rules are passed.

The Washington Post reported that the EPA is finalizing new air-quality rules that would allow oil refineries, coal-fired power plants and other polluters near national parks. The Clean Air Act protections for Class 1 Areas would be weakened if the new rules are put in place.

Glacier National Park is a class 1 air shed, the highest standard for protection through the Clean Air Act. Park officials said they have many monitoring programs including fluoride, visibility and mercury.

The EPA proposal would change how parks measure pollution levels and Glacier National Park officials said there are nearly 50 national parks designated as Class 1 air sheds.
